A Voice in the Silence...

It was a night like any other in Manchester. Dinner was ready, the TV was on, and the phone was charging by the bedside. Then suddenly—everything went dark. A total blackout. No signal, no internet, no news. Just darkness and silence.

Louise looked at her husband, uncertain. What had happened? Social media wouldn’t load. Apps weren’t working. The mobile network was dead. The feeling of being completely cut off, even at home, was unsettling.

Then he quietly got up and reached for something on the shelf: a small portable radio he usually took on walks. He turned it on. After a brief crackle, a calm voice came through from the local station:
“We’re experiencing a major power outage across the North. Crews are responding. Please stay indoors and remain calm.”

That voice was a relief. Even with everything else down, the radio was still there—connecting them, informing them, reassuring them. That night, the radio was more than just a device. It was a lifeline.

While they waited for the lights to return, they listened to soft music, local stories, and even a cheerful interview with a regional author. The hours passed gently. At one point, Louise smiled and said,
“We should get another one of these.”
